The main objective of this architectural style is to best adapt the building to a tropical environment, create a comfortable space to live in and use for various daily activities and reduce the use of air conditioning and lighting energy.



The building design is expected to be passive (formally and mechanically) to create a comfortable space, keep it cool and bright during the day and not easily damaged by heat and rain.



Victor Olgay in his book “Design with a Climate”, develops rules and guidelines for climate responsive architecture in four examples of regions with different climates, one of which is for tropical environments with humid heat.



Designing a house that is passive against a cool tropical environment, starts with location analysis, determines the position and orientation of the mass, determines the shape of the building, the shape of the roof, the position of the windows, materials, colors and so on.



Tropical Architectural Design and Combined with Other Architectural Styles

Often a tropical architectural style is something that prioritizes function, while for form it will follow function, so there is no mention of the aesthetic rules of tropical architecture.



Therefore, architects often combine tropical architectural styles with other styles and will become mixed styles such as Modern Tropical Architecture, Contemporary Tropical, Tropical Traditional, Minimalist Tropical Architecture and many other examples.



Example of Tropical Architecture


Examples of tropical architecture that are easiest to find are traditional house architecture in Indonesia. Much of the traditional architecture and vernacular architecture in Indonesia is architecture that adapts well to tropical environments, for example we see the architecture of the joglo house, bali house, minang house and many more. The triangular roof with a wide overstock signifies a simple and basic tropical architectural style.
